2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Oil Type & Capacity

The 4.3L V6 takes 6.0 US qt (5.7 L) of dexos1 5W-30 with filter; the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 take 8.0 US qt (7.6 L) of dexos1 0W-20 under the updated GM fill guidance.

Check your configuration

Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.

Engine-specific oil grade and corrected capacity

2015 engineSpecified viscosityOil including filter
4.3L V6 LV3dexos1 SAE 5W-306.0 US qt / 5.7 L
5.3L V8 L83dexos1 SAE 0W-208.0 US qt / 7.6 L (updated)
6.2L V8 L86dexos1 SAE 0W-208.0 US qt / 7.6 L (updated)

Early printed V8 capacities may read 8.5 qt; GM later revised the service fill to 8.0 qt with filter. Do not overfill; always verify on the dipstick.

Oil capacity by engine

The published 2015 Silverado capacity chart distinguishes the 4.3L V6 from the 5.3L and 6.2L V8. Capacities are approximate for a complete oil-and-filter change, so fill carefully and finish by checking the dipstick on level ground.

Choosing oil and checking the level

Chevrolet specifies dexos1-approved SAE 5W-30 oil for the 4.3L V6 and SAE 0W-20 for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines. Do not switch a V8 to 5W-30 just because that viscosity is used in the V6. Check the oil-fill cap, current GM service information and dipstick before and after a change.

  • 4.3L EcoTec3 LV3: 5.7 L / 6.0 US qt including filter.
  • 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86: 7.6 L / 8.0 US qt including filter.
  • The oil-life monitor is a service reminder, not a substitute for checking the dipstick.

After the oil change

Run the engine briefly, check around the filter and drain plug for leaks, shut it off and recheck the level after it settles. Record the date, mileage, grade used and filter brand. An oil-pressure warning after the service is a reason to stop the engine immediately, not to wait for the new filter to fill.

Why some manuals say 8.5 quarts

Early 2015 owner-manual printings listed 8.5 US qt (8.0 L) for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 with filter. GM issued a service-operations correction in May 2015 reducing that oil-and-filter capacity to 8.0 US qt (7.6 L), reflected in later owner-manual printings. A truck may still have an earlier booklet. The dipstick and current service information govern the final level.

Reset the oil-life monitor

With the correct oil change complete, display Oil Life Remaining in the driver information centre and hold the confirmation button or trip stem until it reaches 100%. Another factory procedure is ignition ON with engine off, then slowly press the accelerator fully three times within five seconds. Confirm that the monitor shows 100% before driving away.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
