2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Coolant Type & Capacity

The published cooling-system capacity is about 15.1 L for the 4.3L and 15.7 L for the 5.3L/6.2L; use the manufacturer-specified coolant.

Check your configuration

Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.

Cooling capacities

These are total approximate capacities, not necessarily the amount that will drain during a radiator service. Residual coolant remains in the engine, heater core and hoses. A small top-up requires much less than the listed system capacity.

Safe coolant service

GM specifies a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL coolant and clean drinkable water, or the correct pre-mixed equivalent. Never remove a hot pressurized cap. The maintenance schedule calls for coolant service at 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or five years, whichever comes first. Total system capacity is not the same as the amount recovered in a partial drain.

  • 4.3L V6: approximately 15.1 L (15.9 US qt).
  • 5.3L and 6.2L V8: approximately 15.7 L (16.6 US qt).
  • Do not open a hot pressurized cooling-system cap.
Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
