ELECTRICAL & FUSES
2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Won’t Start or Crank
Start by separating a no-crank condition from an engine that cranks but will not start; the possible causes differ.
Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.
No crank versus crank-no-start
A click, slow crank or silence may point to the battery, cables, starter control, range switch or starter. Strong cranking without the engine firing changes the investigation toward fuel, ignition, sensor signals and security systems.
Useful first checks
Observe dash messages, try a known-good key where applicable and verify battery state of charge. Check whether the starter turns the engine normally and whether a diagnostic tool communicates with engine modules. Do not repeatedly crank a suspected flooded or mechanically damaged engine.
- A battery voltage reading alone does not prove cranking capability.
- Try starting in Park with the brake applied; do not bypass interlocks.
- Stop if the starter or cables overheat.
Interpreting the sound
Rapid clicking often accompanies a weak battery or poor connection; one solid click can involve a starter circuit issue; normal strong cranking with no ignition points elsewhere. These patterns are clues, not proof. Scan data and electrical tests are needed to distinguish battery condition, control commands and mechanical faults.
No-crank decision sequence
First note whether dash lights stay bright during a start attempt. If they collapse, test the battery and main power/ground cables. If they stay bright but there is no crank, investigate the starter command, park/neutral recognition and relay/fuse circuit. A normal crank without ignition calls for engine DTCs and fuel/ignition checks. Never bridge a starter relay or bypass safety interlocks to make the vehicle crank.
Cranks but will not start
Record diagnostic codes and confirm correct engine cranking speed before fuel and ignition testing. Direct injection has separate low-pressure and high-pressure fuel circuits; a no-start is not enough to condemn either fuel pump. Do not open fuel plumbing without the proper GM depressurization procedure.
Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
