PROBLEMS & DIAGNOSTICS

2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Fuel Pump Problems & No-Start Diagnosis

A 2015 Silverado that cranks but will not start can have a low-pressure supply problem, a high-pressure pump issue, electrical fault or another engine-control problem.

Check your configuration

Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.

These are different components. A diagnosis and VIN-based parts lookup come before replacement.

Start with the symptom

Separate a no-crank problem from an engine that cranks normally but will not fire. Check battery condition, warning messages and stored diagnostic codes first. Extended cranking, a stall under load and a lean running complaint can point toward fuel delivery, but ignition faults and engine mechanical trouble may look similar. Avoid assuming a pump is bad simply because a key-on hum is not audible.

Two different fuel-pump systems

The direct-injection EcoTec3 engines use a low-pressure in-tank fuel supply and an engine-driven high-pressure system. A replacement in-tank module is not the same part as the engine-mounted high-pressure pump. Appropriate scan data and pressure tests help distinguish electrical feed, low-side pressure, high-side pressure, sensor and control problems. The high-pressure rail can retain dangerous pressure after shutdown; the factory pressure-release procedure is essential.

  • Do not loosen high-pressure fuel connections to test pressure.
  • Use a suitable scanner and approved fuel-pressure equipment; fuel is flammable.
  • Confirm any pump control module programming and VIN compatibility before replacement.

What diagnostic codes can tell you

Codes for fuel-rail pressure, mixture or pump control direct testing but do not identify a failed part on their own. For example, a low-rail-pressure code may arise from inadequate tank supply, high-pressure pump performance, pressure control or sensor data. Save freeze-frame data, note whether the failure happens hot or cold, and compare requested versus measured pressure using the correct GM procedure.

When professional service is the right call

Any external fuel leak, raw-fuel smell, pressure-system repair or pump-module electrical programming calls for qualified service. If the truck stalls unexpectedly, avoid continued driving until the cause is identified.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
