PROBLEMS & DIAGNOSTICS
2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Rough Idle & Misfire
A rough idle or P0300 code means the engine is not running evenly; ignition, fuel, air and mechanical faults can all cause it.
Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.
Read the fault evidence
Record the exact DTCs, freeze-frame conditions and misfire counts. A single-cylinder misfire differs from one that moves between cylinders or occurs only under load. Coil, spark plug, injector and compression tests help narrow the fault.
When to stop driving
A flashing check-engine light can indicate a catalyst-damaging misfire. Ease off the throttle and stop driving safely rather than continuing under load. Do not replace an oxygen sensor or catalytic converter before addressing an active misfire.
- Check whether the symptom appears only after a cold start.
- Look for obvious intake leaks or damaged ignition wiring.
- Seek professional service if compression or fuel pressure testing is needed.
Do not confuse a symptom with a part
P0300 does not mean “replace the spark plugs.” Lean mixtures, low fuel pressure, injector issues or mechanical compression faults can affect multiple cylinders. A code that names a cylinder helps narrow the test sequence but does not identify which component failed.
AFM-related symptoms and cylinder diagnosis
Before replacing a lifter, compare misfire counters by cylinder and verify ignition, injector function and compression. Some AFM-related valve-train failures can cause a persistent dead cylinder, while other rough-idle complaints have simpler causes. A mechanical test is essential when a cylinder remains low on compression.
Match the pattern to the test
One cylinder misfiring repeatedly: inspect that plug and coil circuit, injector and compression. Random misfires across banks: check fuel supply, air leaks, sensor data and mechanical timing. Misfires mainly during towing: record load, fuel trims and ignition performance. Do not swap ignition parts randomly without recording whether the fault follows a component.
Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
