Do not substitute 2500HD/3500HD axle lubricant specifications. Check actual axle and current GM parts supersessions.
Identify the axle
The 2015 GM fluid table specifies SAE 80W-90 axle lubricant for the front axle of 4WD 1500 models (GM 89021671 US / 89021672 Canada). The rear 1500 axle specifies SAE 75W-85 synthetic axle lubricant (GM 19300457 US / 19300458 Canada). These are period GM part numbers, not guaranteed current stock numbers; match the axle by VIN and inspect the current supersession.
Service checks
Inspect for leaking pinion and axle seals, metal debris, abnormal noise and contaminated fluid. Fill height and tightening values matter, so use the correct axle procedure. A differential whine on acceleration or deceleration should be diagnosed before a lubricant change is treated as a cure.
- Check for leaks before opening the housing.
- Use proper support and wheel-chocking practices under a truck.
- Avoid guessing fill quantities by axle appearance.
Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
