PROBLEMS & DIAGNOSTICS
2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Service Trailer Brake System Warning
The Service Trailer Brake System warning means the integrated trailer brake control needs diagnosis. Check trailer wiring and grounds, truck circuits and module codes before replacing a controller.
Confirm the engine, trim, drivetrain, market and installed equipment before using a part number, capacity or repair procedure.
Symptom-based trailer brake checks
| When the warning appears | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Only with one trailer attached | Trailer seven-way plug, pins, brake wiring, magnets and trailer grounds |
| With different trailers | Truck seven-way connector, power and ground, controller and chassis codes |
| When trailer lights are switched on | Ground return and harness voltage drop under lighting load |
| Intermittently over bumps or turns | Connector retention, chafed harness and loose grounds |
| Without a trailer connected | Truck-side wiring, module diagnostic data and stored codes |
These checks narrow the investigation; they do not replace GM’s electrical test procedure or confirm which component has failed.
What does Service Trailer Brake System mean?
On a 2015 Silverado equipped with Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC, RPO JL1), the driver information centre may display this message when a fault is detected. The warning does not by itself identify a bad trailer brake controller. Depending on the stored codes and operating conditions, the fault can involve the trailer connector, trailer-side wiring, grounding, truck wiring, power supply or the control system.
Can you keep towing when the warning appears?
Do not assume electric trailer brakes are available or functioning correctly. Pull over safely, secure the vehicle and trailer, and verify the braking system before continuing to tow. If braking behaviour is uncertain, arrange qualified assistance. The pickup’s own brake system and the trailer brake control system are related but must be diagnosed separately.
- Record the exact message and whether a trailer was connected.
- Do not clear codes before recording them with a scanner that can read chassis/trailer brake modules.
- Do not bypass trailer brake circuits, fit an oversized fuse or continue towing with unverified trailer brakes.
What the GM service bulletins say
GM bulletin PIT5311B covers 2015-2016 Silverado vehicles with ITBC and describes Check Trailer Wiring or Service Trailer Brake messages with C1114. It specifically highlights trailer grounding and associated electrical conditions. Bulletin PIT5529 identifies other potential stored codes, including C1112, C1113, C1114, C111B, U1556 and U1505, and directs technicians to diagnostic tests. These bulletins describe possible causes on affected vehicles, not a universal failure or a recall.
A sensible diagnostic sequence
Confirm the vehicle has factory ITBC, inspect both ends of the seven-way connector for moisture, damage or pushed-back pins, and check accessible grounds and fuses using the correct wiring diagram. Note whether the message changes when trailer lamps operate. A trained technician can use a proper trailer-brake load tester and module-capable scan tool to distinguish truck-side from trailer-side faults. A basic engine-code reader may not show the relevant chassis codes.
Why replacing the dash controller first is risky
The dash control is only one part of the system. A poor trailer ground, damaged brake-output wire or connector can produce the same warning as a control-side fault. Replacing an expensive module without confirming power, communication, output and load may leave the original problem untouched.
Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
