Fuel economy by engine and drivetrain

Chevrolet’s 2015 technical data gives city and highway estimates for the 4.3L V6, 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 in 2WD and 4WD. These are US miles per gallon. The L/100 km figures below are conversions of those estimates, not separate Natural Resources Canada test ratings. Cab, transmission, E85 use and equipment may change the rating applicable to your truck.

What changes real-world consumption

Short cold trips, long idling, winter tires, heavy loads, roof accessories, towing, tire pressure and driving speed can all move real consumption away from the estimate. Compare fuel economy over multiple complete fill-ups and consistent conditions. A sudden unexplained drop accompanied by rough running or codes deserves diagnosis.

  • US mpg and imperial mpg are different units; the table uses US mpg.
  • A lower L/100 km number means less fuel used per distance.
  • For towing, expect substantially higher consumption than the unloaded test estimate.

Fuel tank size and range

The 2015 GM owner-manual capacity table gives 26.0 US gal (98.4 L) for 1500 short and standard boxes, and 34.0 US gal (128.7 L) for long-box 1500 models. Do not calculate usable travel range from the entire nominal tank capacity. Keep a fuel reserve, particularly when towing or travelling remotely.

How to calculate your own L/100 km

Fill the tank to the same pump shutoff point, reset the trip odometer, then at the next fill divide litres added by kilometres travelled and multiply by 100. For example, 70 L over 500 km equals 14.0 L/100 km. A single short tank can be misleading; average several fills for a clearer trend.

Before working on your vehicle

Use the correct model-year manual and current service information. Stop if instructions or safety precautions are unclear, and use a qualified technician for work you cannot verify.
